Social Self-Support Assistance Center "JAMOO"
Outline: The school opened in 1995 in Dakar, capital of Senegal, to assist
women to become self-supporting. It offers 4 years of courses on sewing,
knitting, embroidering, child-rearing and ethics. A certificate accredited
by the government is presented to the students upon graduation. Since 2001,
"Salon de Couture Jamoo," a training shop for graduates, offers a one year
on-the-job-training course. For those who complete the course, an electric
sewing machine and financial aid are provided to open a new dressmaker�fs
shop.
New Developments:
- July, 2005 10 graduated from the center. 8 graduates from the training
shop (third group) finished training and all became independent.
- July, 2006 7 graduated from the center. 6 graduates from the training
shop (fourth group) finished training and all became independent.
- May, 2006 A group from the Ministry of Youth visited the center. They
acknowledged the comprehensive system leading to independence and promised
cooperation in giving job recommendations for graduates.
- September 2, 2006 Graduation and 10th Anniversary Celebration (a year
late)
