2022 DMZ Peace Zone Symposium (WFWP Korea)
WFWP Korea and the United Nations Association Republic of Korea(UNARK) held the DMZ Peace Zone symposium on June 30 at Dongja Art Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul under the theme of "Sustainable Peace Building: Bringing International Organizations and the DMZ." With the sponsorship by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the symposium was attended by more than 150 women leaders and members from Seoul with the following program: call-to-order, welcoming address, greeting address, presentation and discussion, and closing.
In the welcoming address, Dr. Julia Moon, President of WFWPI said, "People are paying closer attention to global peace nowadays. It can be seen as bringing the UN office in Korea has been recently mentioned in the political circles and private organizations." She added, "WFWP Korea has been doing activities to bring UN office in DMZ since 2014 for the realization of world peace and reunification of two Koreas." And she continued by saying that "We hope that today's discussions on bringing international organizations into the DMZ will be spread out to the world to overcome the limitations of the DMZ and change into the image of healing, hope, and peace which would lead to overcoming the global hegemony and the North Korean crisis."
Acting Chairman of the UNARK, Ho-jin Lee, said in a greeting address that "The DMZ is the symbol of the 1953 armistice agreement that the United Nations is involved in to prevent military conflicts between the two Koreas, and the United Nations Command reports things related to the DMZ to the Security Council every year." "I hope that through this symposium, the experts can discuss in-depth how to use the UN for peaceful use of the DMZ," he said.
After that, Heung-soon Park, the honorary professor at Sun Moon University, took the role of moderator for the presentation and discussion. In the presentation, Geun-woo Nam, a researcher at the Incheon Institute, presented the theme of "Sustainable Peace and International Cooperation in the waters bordering Incheon," while Bu-Nam Shin, vice-chairman of the UNARK, presented the theme of "Establishment and Bringing International Organizations in Korea."
