Accessibility and Inclusion: Accessibility in the House for Elder People” was the topic of the event hosted by WFWP Argentina on July 15. The purpose of the event was to bring awareness to the importance of taking care of elders in many different aspects, including through the creation of a more suitable environment inside their living space. A renown architect, Josefina Ocampo, was our special guest speaker who shared her deep concern about improving the lives of the elderly as a way to express love for them.
Josefina Ocampo is a professional architect that works in the field of architecture specifically focused on the necessities of disabled people. She has developed plans for buildings that offer access to people with various physical disabilities, in order to give them equal opportunities of displacing themselves around. In 2017, Ms.Ocampo was recognized by Design for All Foundation for her transformative good practice in the category of “Adequacy of spaces for older adults, technical aids, training and teaching of alternatives.”
The special focus of the speech that Ms. Ocampo gave was to help elderly people with physical disabilities to be able to move freely inside their living space. She offered simple solutions that even family members could apply in their living spaces for their elderly family members.
In Argentina, family structures that include three generations living together under one roof are still prevalent, particularly in the inner parts of the country, far from the big cities. So the desire of improving the quality of life for one’s grandparents is very strong. For this reason, the content of the speech was very well received. The webinar was then followed by a Q&A session that provided an interactive experience for the audience and speaker.
The closing remarks made by WFWP Subregion 2 Director, Prof. Gloria Miranda Dantas, linked the event’s topic with one of the main missions of WFWP which is to recover family values and strengthen familial bonds. The event was delighted by a beautiful song prepared by our community’s young people.
