Life Education for Youth
Written by: WFWP Cambodia
The flood of information has had a challenging aspect in Cambodia. The growth of GDP has been remarkable in recent years, but there are still many children who have little opportunity to learn or discover key life lessons within their families since one or both parents leave home for work or children have to work away from home from an early age. In addition, the number of cases in which young people are involved in crime without realizing it is increasing.
Based on this, WFWP Cambodia encouraged students at two high schools in Kratie to think about how to lead a sound life from various perspectives. WFWP introduced morally respected figures from history, people who had achieved success, encouraged students to think together about what happiness is for individuals and for the society and explained environmental issues that are being discussed around the world.
It was a two-day program. On the first day, WFWP shared the above lectures with teachers at these two target high schools. On the second day, WFWP presented the content to 11th and 12th graders from each school. By making the teachers familiar with the content of the lectures, WFWP expects they can guide group discussions appropriately and can continuously guide more of their students from diverse backgrounds even after this program is over.
After the lectures, each class had a discussion about one topic. WFWP prepared four to five topics, which all interrelatedly asked the students to reflect on and face their own lives, school lives and life in society with ownership. To avoid having only outspoken students advance the discussion, WFWP asked everyone to first write down their opinions individually. Afterwards, they brought their ideas together and presented their summarized contents class by class and topic by topic.
The students participated very seriously, taking notes and even practicing their presentations beforehand. WFWP is sure some students have retained something new for their lives. WFWP hopes they will develop their daily lives more meaningfully as a result. WFWP Cambodia thanks all the teachers for their great cooperation.
Upon the completion of this program, the Royal School of Administration, which has an MOU with WFWP Cambodia, suggested that this program also be extended to middle and high schools in Kratie, and so WFWP Cambodia is planning this in cooperation with WFWP Japan.
