Sharing Love, Hope and Kindness with Food (WFWP Malaysia)
Written by: Wan Tan
Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, Women’s Federation for World Peace (WFWP) Malaysia has been actively teaming up with other NGOs and the local community in pooling resources to help struggling families cope with the predicament caused by the pandemic.
In a recent humanitarian aid event from August 28 to 29, 2021, a total of 253 underprivileged families from the areas of Ipoh, Sungai Siput and Bidor in Perak state and Rawang of Selangor State received food packages of rice, fruits, noodles, sugar, oil, canned foods and other food items. The food rations were made possible by the Member of Parliament for Sungai Siput, Hon. Kesavan Subramaniam and many other generous sponsors and donors from the local community.
“These families are severely affected and some no longer have a reliable income source for food sustenance,” said Ms. Carol Cheng, Project Coordinator in Perak State. “Due to the worsening COVID-19 outbreak in Malaysia, we decided to deliver the food rations house to house, especially those living in rural areas. We really thank all the volunteers who went all out to distribute the rations,” explained Mrs. Kanakambal Letchumanan, who headed the distribution team in Perak.
The distribution was done with the tireless efforts of 25 volunteers from WFWP, Universal Peace Federation Malaysia and the Sri Saradha Devi Ashram. In Selangor, Mdm. Shanta Venugopal, Project Coordinator in Selangor State, gathered a group of friends and raised food packages for 40 needy families in Rawang. She said, “The pandemic has left people suffering out there. Food is love. When we share food and groceries with them, we are also sharing love, hope and kindness.”
Some of the recipients of the food packages were close to tears as they received the much-needed items. WFWP Malaysia and its associates will continue to encourage the public to step it up to help the less fortunate and reduce the burden of underprivileged families. We also thank the women volunteers for taking the lead in initiating and coordinating the humanitarian aid projects to support the needy.
