Ukrainian Petrykivka Painting at the Pentecost Festival
Written by: Anastasia Lapteva
On May 27-28, 2023, the Women’s Federation of Ukraine and Germany took part in the Pentecost Festival in Bad Camberg, Germany. The event brought together more than 450 participants and guests from more than 10 countries.
The project was aimed at popularizing Ukrainian culture, in particular the Petrykivka painting - an intangible cultural heritage of humanity included in the UNESCO list. A master class on this style was conducted by the artist, calligrapher and member of the Union of Designers of Ukraine, Maryna Sarkisyan, who traveled almost 2,000 km to come from Ukraine.
During these two days, more than 40 participants received the guidance of a craftswoman and got acquainted with the technique of Petrykiv painting. They learned to use the characteristic elements and color palettes that define this style. Each participant created his or her own work, which became a memorable souvenir of the project and evidence of creativity. This contributed to cultural exchange and cooperation between Ukraine and Germany.
"When you sincerely want to touch our Ukrainian art, you touch every soul. When you sincerely rejoice, at how these souls smile at art, every smile of people, every good word they say to Ukraine, every shining eye of people from their drawing will remain in memory for many, many years. Ukrainian art cannot help touching such depths of the soul, one cannot help falling in love with it, because this is Ukraine in every flower and in every smear! When you see how inspired people are to draw, then it doesn't matter whether they are adults or children, boundless joy fills the soul!" said Marina Sarkisyan.
In addition to the master classes, a charity fair was held at the event to support Ukrainian families affected by the war. Participants and guests of the project had the opportunity to purchase items with authors’ engravings, created within the framework of the project. It was a great opportunity to support those in need and show solidarity with an important cause.
The connection between the Women’s Federation of Ukraine and Germany, master classes and a charity fair reflect our common goal of expanding cultural exchange, supporting people who find themselves in difficult life situations and strengthening friendships between countries.
