WFWP Burkina Faso Plants New Life
Written by: Ye Jun Nonguierma
On September 4, 2021, WFWP Burkina Faso organized and implemented a tree donation and planting project in the village of Tintilou, Komki-Ipala. This project was initiated as a part of the Giving for Good International (GFGI) Climate Action Grant Project. In July of this year, Burkina Faso was awarded the GFGI grant for their future project on “environmental awareness and call to action.”
With the help of 90 volunteers, including volunteers from the International Association of Youth and Students for Peace (IAYSP), WFWP Burkina Faso planted a total of 300 fruit trees including banana trees, orange trees, lemon trees, guava trees, soursop trees, tangerine trees and apple cinnamon trees. The fruit trees which were planted on this day were donated to Child’s Hope Africa, an organization that owns an orphanage, a nursery and a primary school to assist with the literacy of these orphans and other children of this village. We hope that the fruit trees planted on their land contribute to the fight against drought as well as climate change. Secondly, we hope that the fruits produced by the trees in the future can help feed the children at the orphanage. Children of the orphanage, pupils of the school, as well as the leaders of Child’s Hope Africa also took also part in the planting.
After finishing planting trees the volunteers enjoyed meals and drinks together, which were sponsored by WFWP Burkina Faso and cooked by mothers from Child’s Hope Africa. Before leaving, WFWP Burkina Faso offered a bag of rice and a carton of spaghetti for the orphans.
M. David Ouedraogo, Administrator of Child’s Hope Africa Association was extremely grateful to WFWP Burkina Faso for this initiative. Mr. Ouedraogo mentioned that we could have come and offered them a bag of fruits, but instead of fruits, we thought of donating plants. He really appreciated our efforts as fruit trees will be much more beneficial to them as they will provide fruits for years to come.
WFWP Burkina Faso is planning to continue its tree-planting endeavors in the near future.
GFGI is a project that aims to conserve the Earth and all life through outreach, humanitarian aid, and circular fashion. Giving for Good is a project of WFWPI, an international peace organization in General Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. One of the many components of WFWPI’s mission is to strive towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Environmental sustainability is a concern close to the heart of the co-founder of WFWPI, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon. Dr. Sun Jin Moon, the Co-founder's daughter and Senior Vice President of WFWPI, launched the "Giving for Good" project in April 2020, encouraging people to resell their new and gently used clothing. Through the funds raised from the successful GFG Auction early this year, GFG was able to offer grants to 10 climate action projects around the world.
