Wednesday, February 17, was an auspicious day for the community of the New Hope Academy in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Ten years ago, the school was initially established as a Kindergarten facility.
The Grand Opening of the Sun Hak building has enabled the school to complete its Primary Division which began in 2014. This new building will house classrooms for students in Years five and six. The Honiara City Mayor, Mr. Wilson Mamae, with the assistance of the City Education Director and the local Universal Peace Federation Director, cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening of the new building. This action was accompanied by much applause and excitement as this was a much-anticipated event for the crowd who had gathered at the school.
For the New Hope Academy, this is a new chapter in the provision of quality education for the children in Honiara. The school has focused on continuing to enhance its learning environment by using updated educational resources such as whiteboards and projectors. While WFWP Australia has provided a range of books to set up the school’s library and to support the reading program, WFWP Japan has provided classroom furniture and educational equipment to furnish the new classrooms. The growing school population will also receive ten new teachers through the Department of Education. These teachers have all expressed their admiration for the quality of the learning environments which they feel will be of great benefit to improving the lives of the students and staff.
