Green Solar Energy For African Villages Phase 3 (WFWP Kenya)
Written by: Susan Kone
The Green Solar energy for the African Villages Phase 3 is a project sponsored by WFWPI and implemented by WFWP Kenya. The Venue of this event took place in Kaai Village, Kitui County in Eastern Kenya. The WFWP Kenya entourage left on March 18, 2022 and arrived at the destination of Kaai village after a 5-hour journey on the road. It’s a far-off village with sandy roads surrounded by rocky hills and serene landscapes. The villagers are mainly small-scale farmers of millet, sorghum, green grams and watermelon. The “Light of Ngieni Women Group” led by the Chairperson, Mrs. Nzunya Mwikya was so delighted to be the host and welcomed the team warmly. The villagers are a hard-working community despite the many challenges, including water shortage and lack of electricity to light up their homes.
The WFWP team consisted of Dr. Susan Kone, Chairperson of WFWP Africa; Dr. Edwin Aketch; Mrs. Carol Oidho, Program Coordinator; Mr. Hillary Otieno, logistics assistant; and Ms. Grace Sune, a youth volunteer.
The first day of the project had 2 sessions, the first one being an education program where the women received a lecture on “Family Values.” It was followed by a liquid soap-making class where women learned how to make hand washing soap for their families to sell. We hope that this skill can empower the women in the communities to provide financial support for their families. The second Session was the donation of the solar lamps and installation to pre-selected homes, where other women also came to learn how to install the solar lamps in their homes.
A total of 33 women benefited from the project and the area assistant, Chief Madam Rachel Taabu thanked the WFWP for the project which has benefited so many families who cannot afford electricity and had to depend on kerosene lamps and firewood, which are harmful to the health.
They were also introduced to the Mother`s Heart Peace Network which is an Initiative of WFWP Africa, with a goal of uniting all women under one network for better teamwork, networking, as well as sharing ideas and skills. A total of 40 women registered as Peace Associates through the Mother’s Heart Peace Network.
The second and last day was dedicated to family outreach and we visited 2 homes to expand our networking with the village families. The Women in the Village were amazed by the works of WFWPI and appreciated the Co-Founder of WFWPI, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, for having founded this noble organization of women which goes beyond race, culture, tribe, background and religion to serve humanity. They testified that it was the first time that they have ever received that kind of visit and project in their village.
It was a successful and fulfilling 2-day program of Green solar energy for the African Villages.
