Green Solar Energy for the African Villages
Written by: Susan Kone
The Green Solar Energy for the African Villages project was sponsored by WFWPI, implemented by WFWP Kenya and held in partnership with the Kajiado County 1st Lady H.E. Dr. Edna Lenku who is a well-known environmentalist and women leader in Kajiado County.
The program for the day was divided into 2 sessions. The morning session was about education and the afternoon session was about donations. The education began with mentorship by the 1st Lady, followed by lectures on hygiene, family values and entrepreneurship. The participants also received a lecture on how to take care of the environment to combat climate change, as the village is near the Amboseli National Park and there are many cases of human and animal conflict as water can be scarce, especially during the dry seasons.
The 1st Lady also donated corrugated iron sheets to the young mothers to repair the roofs of their houses. WFWP donated solar lamps and hand-washing soap. The Kajiado County 1st Lady who is also the mentor of the group together with the Women Group, was very grateful to WFWPI and the Kenya Chapter. She expressed the wish to partner with WFWP in various projects for continuation and positive impact in the village.
