On August 10, 2024, the Women’s Federation for World Peace South Africa (WFWPSA) officially launched the Global Women Peace Network South Africa (GWPNSA) through a hybrid event that included both virtual and in-person participation. Themed "Women Empowerment: A Catalyst for Sustainable Peace," the event brought together 20 online participants and others who gathered at the June 16 Memorial Acre in Soweto’s Central Western Jabavu. Funded by the Women’s Federation for World Peace International, the launch aimed to unite women and NGOs in a collaborative peacebuilding effort at the grassroots level.
The event’s key objectives included:
Presenting the Global Women Peace Ambassador’s Award to women leaders committed to fostering peaceful communities.
Promoting healing and reconciliation for women affected by racial discrimination during Apartheid through the Bridge of Peace Ceremony.
Supporting WFWPSA membership growth and sustainability.
Honoring the legacy of the 1956 Women’s March against Apartheid, a historic event celebrated annually in South Africa.
Moderated by Ms. Jina Kuse and Ms. Hayong Wonderlik from WFWPSA’s Young Professionals, the program opened with a prayer by Mrs. Safi Mbengeni, creating a warm, reflective atmosphere.
Local Councilor Lineo Tsotetsi delivered a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of the launch in light of South Africa’s enduring legacy of women’s activism. This was followed by remarks from WFWPSA President Mrs. Gwen Tshimbana-Mtiti, who highlighted the organization’s dedication to peacebuilding and women’s empowerment.
Dr. Sallyann Goodall Franklin of WFWP UK delivered the founder’s address, inspired by WFWPI co-founder Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon’s speech, "Women as a Turning Point for Peace." This address underscored WFWP’s global mission and the essential role of women in peace efforts, quoting Dr. Moon’s words from Mother of Peace: "I am here to give my wedding ring to everyone," symbolizing women’s selfless spirit in the pursuit of peace.
The event featured speeches from distinguished guests:
Mrs. Dorothy Motubatse Hounkpatin from the Universal Peace Federation South Africa, who discussed the vital intersection of peace and development and the unique role of women.
Ms. Esther Padi, Chairperson of Innovating Kasi Organisation, who spoke about grassroots innovation and its impact on communities. Her organization leads two initiatives: Generation Am Woke and the Mother and Daughter Movement.
HRH Princess Khushe Mtirara of the Royal Kingdom of Abathembu, representing the African Royalties Network, discussed traditional leadership’s role in peacebuilding.
HRH Princess Tshepi Motloung, Founder of the FutureLift Foundation, emphasized sustainable development and the empowerment of young women through programs aimed at community upliftment.
Following the speeches, Mrs. Gwen Tshimbana-Mtiti and Mrs. Vilma Kuse presented the Global Women Peace Ambassador’s Award to ten community women leaders for their contributions to community-building and advocacy in women’s empowerment, education, politics, and health.
The program also included cultural performances, such as a soulful musical piece by Ms. Kgosigadi and her mother, and a traditional dance by the Mmangwana Youth group. The Bridge of Peace Ceremony, led by Flory Ledwaba and Mrs. N. Mositoane, symbolized unity and reconciliation, echoing the event’s central theme.
Ms. Salome Lebepe from WFWP Limpopo issued a call to action, encouraging attendees to further their peace and empowerment efforts in their communities. The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. Debbie Raphuti from World Women Leading Change Africa, who emphasized the importance of collective action in achieving lasting peace. A commemorative tree-planting ceremony followed, symbolizing growth, unity, and a commitment to fostering peace for future generations. The event ended with refreshments, giving attendees a chance to network and reflect on the day’s impactful discussions.
