On May 5, 2024, members of WFWP Malaysia embarked on a heartwarming visit to Sentuhan Budi Children’s Home in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, spreading the spirit of joy and togetherness in celebration of Hari Raya. The event, marked by a series of engaging activities, aimed to bring smiles to the faces of the young children and foster a sense of community and compassion.
The manager of the home, Ms. Fateha, extended a warm welcome, expressing her delight that volunteers from different faiths and backgrounds were coming together to celebrate the festive season as a Malaysian family.
The day began with a mini coloring competition, where 18 young children were paired up with volunteers to showcase their creativity in designing and coloring their own ketupat, a traditional rice cake made of white rice covered by woven young coconut leaves in a diamond shape.
The top five winners were selected and awarded prizes for their creativity and coloring skills. President Mdm Lina Cheng and Deputy President Datin Dr. Wellens Mimi Maria Farizan also distributed duit raya (money packets) and goodie bags to the children and home staff.
“A few girls came up and sat around me and plucked the strings of my guitar with curiosity and excitement. It was a very heart-warming moment. If given the opportunity to learn and develop themselves, I believe these children would certainly have a bright future!” shared youth guitarist, Ms. Lim Xin Ying, who performed a cheerful rendition of “Count on Me” with Mr. Tan Ren Sheng.
The volunteers also led the excited children in an energetic dance with the recent viral song “Alamak Raya Lagi” that got everyone in high spirits. Finally, the children also took to the stage with a lively dance, showcasing their enthusiasm.
The program was emceed by Ms. Wong Hui Zhi, who was very happy to be given the opportunity to interact with the children and bring joy and fun to them. “It was a new experience for me and it’s definitely a memorable one.”
The 3-hour program ended with a delicious lunch. We extend our gratitude to all sponsors and volunteers for sharing their love and generous contributions, making the visit meaningful and exciting.
